Out of Thunderbird Marina in West Vancouver at first light, north up the Strait of Georgia. A pair of humpbacks stopped the crossing – two of them, mating season, up to two school buses long.
Savary is five kilometres of sand and old growth with white-tailed deer running the place. Lawn games, breakfast sandwiches, family. Then north to the anchorages: Hernando, Cortez, and Desolation Sound, which got its name because Vancouver's expedition arrived in November and found the weather miserable. In August it is nothing of the sort.
Salmon caught that afternoon for dinner. Then a rolly night at anchor – I did not sleep well, and rolled out of bed more than once.
We had meant to stop at Secret Cove on the way home and the wind decided otherwise, so it was Gibsons instead, where the ice cream is mint chocolate chip and coconut. The last evening was in Center Bay off Gambier, messing about in an inflatable kayak with holes in the bottom so everyone got soaked, a BC ferry going past in the distance and the sun going down behind it.
Two nights, and faster than any of us expected it to be.
