Four nights in Stockholm in the quiet season – short days, early sunsets. Late February into early March buys a little more daylight without giving up the winter. Then the train to Uppsala for three nights: a university town with deep Viking history, close enough to Stockholm to be an easy add. Gamla Uppsala, the old town with its burial mounds, is the thing to see.
Then the flight to Kiruna and on to Abisko National Park for four nights. Abisko is about as reliable as the northern lights get – clear skies form over the lake when the surrounding country is clouded in – and staying inside the park means no driving around at midnight chasing them. Lodging in the park is limited and meals mostly happen on property; there is no town. Days were cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, dog sledding, and cold plunges with a sauna on the lake. The Kungsleden, the long cross-country ski trail, starts here.
Plan for the Arctic doing what it wants – heavy snow, serious cold, and the odd night with nothing overhead. Four nights is close to the minimum that makes the odds worth it.
